A Single Man | Film by Tom Ford

A Single Man (2009) Trailer

Tom Ford's historical importance (to date) rests in part on his unique collaborations with the late twentieth century's great commercial photographers: Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts and so on. With them, he championed the idea that style could govern our memories, without an appeal to straightforward nostalgia. Evidence of this same balance of past and present can also be found in the clothes he famously created at Gucci. Ford drew from the past in ways that clearly distinguish tribute from innovation, evoking both technological change and the timeless truths of the human form.

In his first feature film, Ford continues along this rich and aesthetically complex pathway, using the recent history of the photographic image to tell a story both historical and bracingly contemporary. The setting is Southern California and our moment in time is officially the early sixties. We meet George Falconer (Colin Firth), a gay college professor, as he learns that his lover Jim (Matthew Goode) has died in a car wreck. Grief overwhelms him, and his “invisible status” in society begins to close in again. Suicide seems the best way out. But a mad night with Charley (Julianne Moore), his best girlfriend from England, and the unexpected attentions of an angora-sweater-clad young man make George think twice.

Based on a late-career Christopher Isherwood novel, told largely through flashback and featuring alarmingly precise attention to period detail in furniture, costume and architecture, A Single Man could easily have felt like a throwback, a work of atavism. But Ford pulls this pre-AIDS tale of gay love and loss into our age by reminding us, again, of what is eternal in life, love and how we choose to forgive. The film deliberately reveals how George pulls himself from the narcissism of self-sacrifice to an understanding of his value to the world and the people around him. Ford seems to be gently insisting that the rich and complex personal histories of gay men, from any age, must be part of the political calculations of our time. A Single Man confirms this artist's ongoing impact on our culture and our awareness of our place within it. - Noah Cowan - Selected from TIFF

Gareth Pugh Spring/Summer 2010 Collection Preview Video

In advance of the unveiling of his collection for S/S 2010 in Paris, fashion designer Gareth Pugh collaborates once again with filmmaker Ruth Hogben to lay out the inspiration behind his forthcoming show in a unique video piece. Each of these films represents one of four elements - earth, wind, water and fire - presented simultaneously as an interactive cube and set against a soundscape devised by Matthew Stone. A prequel rather than a preview, this piece sets the mood for Pugh's forthcoming collection through a combination of art, fashion and moving image. - Selected from SHOWstudio

Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony Tokyo

Chloë Sevigny by Joe DeNardo is the first in a series of short films commissioned by Opening Ceremony in celebration of the new store opening in Tokyo on August 30. The first film in the series of three imagines Chloë 's world as a phantasmagoria of color and analog film photography. The video includes a dream-like montage of Chloë styling herself in the collection spliced with colorful abstraction, a shot of the highly coveted Buckle Boots, sneak peaks of Chloë's upcoming book Reds, and a mysterious voiceover in an alien language. DeNardo, a friend of Chloë's, followed the collection from its early design stages last year, through magazine shoots, fashion presentations, and now finally, to the collction's debut in Tokyo. In other words, he's the perfect person to capture the essence of Chloë's new collection of menswear for men and women. Look out for Joe's band Growing, performing at our Opening Celebration on August 29. - selected from Opening Ceremony

'The September Issue' Trailer

"Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue for 20 years, is the most powerful and polarizing figure in fashion. Larger than life and more complex than fiction, Wintour embodies a fascinating contradiction of passion and perfectionism as she reigns over a dizzying array of designers, models, photographers, and editors.

Director R.J. Cutler delivers a rare insider account of the nine months leading up to the printing of the highly anticipated September issue of the magazine, which promises to be the biggest one ever. He takes us behind the scenes at fashion week, to Europe and back, on shoots and reshoots, and into closed- door staff meetings, bearing witness to an arduous and sometimes emotionally demanding process.

At the eye of this annual fashion hurricane is the two-decade relationship between Wintour and Grace Coddington, incomparable creative director and genius stylist. They are perfectly matched for this age-old conflict between creator and curator. Through them, we see close up the delicate creative chemistry it takes to remain at the top of the ever-changing fashion field.

Cutler cleverly deconstructs the creative process as it plays out in the hallowed halls of Vogue, lined with racks of couture. In The September Issue, his access and insight are impressive and make us aware that he is offering us a privileged glimpse into a world many dream about but few see." - John Cooper (Selected from the 2009 Sundance Film Festival Official Catalog)

The September Issue won the Grand Jury Prize for Excellence in Cinematography at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
